I sat down on the deck at Main Beach, East Hampton Village, and looked out at the water. To one side was a vista of dozens of people doing yoga together. And to my right, was this view of the lifeguard chair, waiting for the day to begin. At nine, sharp, young denizens of the village climb up on that chair and keep a watch out for swimmers. Every year they save lives, up and down the coast (often during a riptide event). I'm grateful to the staff who train and support these young people, teaching them skills that will serve them throughout their lives as they apply the discipline and vigilance to other aspects of their lives.
