Beneath Plum Blossoms - oil painting on 14" x 18" canvas In Japan, ume (Japanese plum blossoms) begin to bloom in February, signaling the end of winter. At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, an event called Baikasai is held, in which local geiko (Kyoto geisha) and their apprentice maiko perform a traditional tea ceremony and serve matcha to visitors beneath blossoming ume. This is a painting of Ichiteru, a geiko from the Kamishichiken district, preparing matcha (Japanese green tea). It is a study for a larger painting. All of my artwork is signed, comes with a certificate of authenticity and is securely shipped with tracking.
